Abstract

The effects of Cinnamomum spp. oils on the control of the termite Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki.

Abstract

Mature leaves of Cinnamomum osmophloeum and C. zeylanicum were collected and steam distilled to obtain the essential oils. Content and composition of the oils were determined. Filter paper and wood flour steeped in the oils were tested for their termite (Coptotermes formosanus) resistance. The main component of C. osmophloeum oil was cinnamic aldehyde, whereas that of C. zeylanicum was eugenol. The latter exhibited the greatest termite resistance, and effectiveness was proportional to the concentration of the oil solution.
