Plant resources of South-East Asia No. 5 (2). Timber trees: minor commercial timbers.
Abstract
In this companion volume to 'Plant resources of South-East Asia No. 5 (1). Timber trees: major commercial timbers', timbers that are economically less important are listed and described. An introductory chapter is presented on definitions, the role of timber trees, grouping of timbers, botany, ecology, properties, processing, forest management, silviculture, harvesting, agroforestry and urban forestry, forest and timber policy, biodiversity, conservation and breeding, forestry research in South East Asia and prospects. This is followed by information on individual timbers which are listed alphabetically by genus. The 62 genera listed are described with regard to nomenclature, distribution, uses, and the various aspects covered in the introduction. Selected species within the genera are briefly described, with details of vernacular names, distribution, timber uses and botanical and other observations. Tables are presented on the physical and mechanical properties of selected species. There is also a 16-page glossary of terms and indexes of scientific and vernacular plant names.
