Abstract

Role of symbiotic associations in nutrition of tropical acacias.

Abstract

A review of work done under ACIAR Project 8371, which involved collaborative research between various Philippine organizations and the University of Queensland, Australia. Related collaborative research between the 2 countries is also included. Aspects covered are: plant/microbe relations (reports on host specificity with strains of Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium); Rhizobium ecology in the soil; inoculum development of rhizobial strains for various Acacia spp.; tolerance of rhizobial strains and Acacia spp. towards acidity and salinity; nitrogen fixation; mineral nutrition (studies with N and P fertilizers); and mycorrhizas (Thelephora, Glomus and Gigaspora spp.). Most of the data reported is for A. mangium and A. auriculiformis, but many other Acacia spp. are mentioned.
