New tree crops from interspecific Leucaena hybrids.

Abstract

Research into species incompatibility has revealed that the genus is highly intercompatible, with 78 of 182 combinations among 13 species producing hybrid seed. When 58 interspecific hybrids were tested for fertility, 26 produced seed via open pollination; 13 produced no pods. Single and 3-way hybrids between the 4x species L. leucocephala, L. diversifolia and L. pallida are seen as particularly useful in widening the genetic base. Interspecific Leucaena hybrids have potential for use in unfavourable environments, for the production of gum, timber (for furniture, polewood and lumber) and fodder, and for shade and support. Means of producing seedless hybrids are described.
