Abstract

What is "giant" Leucaena ?.

Abstract

The giant or arboreal Salvador type, the Peru type and Hawaiian Giant types are referred to L. leucocephala. The Salvador type is considered to have originated in Morozan Department, El Salvador, although the probable centre of origin of the species is thought to be Yucatan, Mexico. Hawaiian Giant types are thought to have been developed in Hawaii from imported Salvador type seed. The six major available Salvador strains, with PI (plant introduction) numbers, are listed.<new para>ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:<new para>From a discussion of the origins and taxonomy of the giant or arboreal 'Salvador-type', it is concluded that the species is Leucaena leucocephala that was taken to Hawaii from the Morazan province of El Salvador, an area now deforested but with relict trees in Jocoro.
