Abstract

Determination of relative tannin contents of the barks of some Malaysian plants.

Abstract

Tannin contents were determined by the method of formaldehyde precipitation. Data are tabulated for 50 species in 23 families from Peninsular Malaysia, including 5 exotics. Families with generally high contents are Euphorbiaceae, Guttiferae, Leguminosae and Rhizophoraceae. Possible commercial sources are Acacia auriculaeformis (tannin content 18.3%) and Rhizophoraceae (10.1-11.4%).
