In the spring of 2009, severe leaf spot symptoms were observed on radish growing in greenhouses in the Latium region of Italy. Discrete, water-soaked to greasy spots were observed on leaves, with some spots surrounded by a narrow yellow halo. There was no evidence of marginal V-shaped lesions to indicate vascular black rot disease caused by X. campestris pv. campestris. Based on pathogenicity, host range and molecular characterization, the isolates were identified as X. campestris pv. raphani. This is thought to be the first report of X. campestris pv. raphani. on radish in Italy.
