Abstract

In July 2009, symptoms of a yellowing disease were observed in vineyards in the Palatinate area. The diseased vines showed a strong, almost complete red discoloration of the leaf blade, combined with low leaf roll symptoms, reduced root growth and partially dead shoots. The molecular characterization of the isolates from the diseased vines revealed the causal organism as phytoplasma from the aster yellows group. This is thought to be the first record of aster yellows disease on grapevine in Palatinate area, Germany.
