Explore the science

At the heart of Forest Science is the forestry abstracting and indexing database. Unique in its scope, depth of coverage and functionality, this is the leading database on forestry information. The database is updated weekly and contains content from 1939 onwards. Each abstract record includes a detailed and informative summary along with the full bibliographic data.

Forest Science Database is available on our CAB Direct platform.

The CAB Direct Platform has a variety of functions to improve your searching and access to full text including:

  • Flexible searching and browsing options to help users carry out the search most suited to their needs and level of expertise, including "Quick" and "Advanced" searches and a browse function for users without a specific search in mind.

  • Seamless searching between the current file of records from 1973 to the present day and the archive file of records from 1939-1973. The archive file has been substantially improved by re-indexing records to add current terminology to enable easier searching across both files.

  • Enhanced search management functions, so users can improve search results using "Refine" and "More like this". Additionally, they can mark specific records to refine, export to disc, email, print or export to bibliographic software such as RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite and Reference Manager.

  • CAB Thesaurus, the essential tool for indexing and retrieving information that allows users to search the database in a far more systematic and specific way than simply searching on free text.

  • Extensive and improved linking facilities - from abstract to full text in just three clicks. Users can link to full text journal articles through CrossRef, Ingenta and PubMedCentral, link to articles via PubMed, Google and Yahoo or link to document delivery suppliers such as the British Library, CISTI and Infotrieve.

  • Open URL compliance and support to serve libraries who wish to select and customise the links of most value to the user.
