Minor crops and underutilized species: lessons and prospects.
Chapter: 44 (PageNo: 605)
Padulosi, S. Hoeschle-Zeledon, I. Bordoni, P.
2007 CABI (H ISBN 9781845930998)
This chapter defines what minor and underutilized crops are, describes them and their relevance to people and for research and development interventions, and in the context of crop wild relatives, and distinguishes them from major crops. One of the objectives of this chapter is to provide an overview of evolution of the attention paid to underutilized species over the last 30 years (divided into periods 1970-1980, 1981-1990, 1991-2000 and 2001-present), in an effort to underscore the increasing recognition of the values of underutilized species by the international community. Characterizing stakeholders working today on underutilized species, lessons from ethnobotanical surveys, conservation outlook, lessons from community-based work, market prospects, and lessons from networking, are also discussed.
