CABI Training Course Success

We’re continuing to pass our microorganism-related expertise on to a range of clients through our training courses.

Based at our Egham laboratory, CABI experts have been running training courses for professionals in the field of microorganisms for over 25 years. In fact, CABI Europe – UK, Egham, are recognised as the UK experts. As a result, our scientists are often called upon to provide courses for other organisations, including the WFCC, ECCO and the UKFCC, and have now trained over 5000 participants in 13 countries worldwide.

In May this year, CABI specialists ran two highly successful training courses entitled ‘basic identification of environmental fungi’. These covered a range of topics, such as ‘techniques for examining fungi’, ‘the use of diagnostic media’, ‘classification of fungal groups’ and ‘the identification of 50 key laboratory species’.

The two courses were attended by 15 microbiologists and laboratory personnel involved in environmental monitoring programmes from leading pharmaceutical companies. As well as the tuition and demonstrations provided by CABI’s team, each was given a set of demonstration slides and a fully illustrated Identification Manual. ‘The sessions were excellent, especially the practicals’ said one course participant. ‘The use of PowerPoint and drawings were extremely helpful. The CABI specialists are clearly very knowledgeable.’’

The training programmes we’re providing at our Egham site will continue with a course covering the ‘preservation, storage and maintenance of microorganisms’, which will run from  October 30 to Nov 1 2007. Places are still available on this course, which is perfect for  microbiologists and laboratory personnel. Presented by invited expert speakers, as well as by CABI’s own experts, it will provide tuition on all aspects of the culture, maintenance, preservation, collection, and management of microorganisms.
