Chronic non-communicable diseases and mental health in Africa.

This chapter reviews basic science, practice and policy related to mental health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in African settings. It presents the prevalence and epidemiological research on the co-occurrence of NCDs and mental disorders. It discusses the global agenda for mental health and NCD prevention and control, the mental health resources/systems/policy in Africa, and the challenges in integrating mental health and NCD care in African settings. Lastly, it outlines the frameworks and strategies to address the co-occurrence of NCDs and mental disorders in low- and middle-income countries, and offers suggestions and recommendations for future studies.
