Chapter 2 (Page no: 14)
A review of cancers in Africa.
This chapter briefly describes cancer incidence and mortality in low- and middle-income countries and outlines key global players involved in agenda setting for the control, treatment and overall management of cancers globally. The prevalence, morbidity, mortality and causes (infections, tobacco smoking, alcohol intake, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, obesity and environmental pollution) of cancer in Africa are reviewed. The importance of cancer data collection, and the diagnosis, treatment options (chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy) and palliative care for cancer patients are discussed. The African health system, including governance, policies, programmes, training, funding, health workforce, health service delivery, and health-seeking behaviour, is described. Opportunities in research, technical training and availability of new treatments (e.g., vaccines) for cancer are discussed.
