Biofuel crops: production, physiology and genetics.

Book cover for Biofuel crops: production, physiology and genetics.

Description

This book begins with a review of the history of biofuel. It contains chapters that are devoted to emerging technologies for biofuel production, cell wall structure and destructing approaches, cellulosic biofuel crops role in phytoremediation, and feedstock pretreatment methods. Detailed discussion on the physiological and genetic research challenges and opportunities for the improvement of biofue...

Chapter 14 (Page no: 292)

Bast and leaf fibre crops: kenaf, hemp, jute, Agave, etc.

Rapid depletion of fossil fuel sources, exponentially increasing consumption of fuels in the automobile sectors and negative impacts of fossil fuels on environment and health make the search for alternative sources of fuel an absolute necessity. Among principal bast and leaf fibre crops of the world, kenaf, roselle, hemp, jute and Agave have high potential as second generation lignocellulosic biofuel crops. In this chapter, the origin, ecology, distribution, importance as biofuel crop, vegetative and reproductive morphology, fibre development and maturation, lignocellulosic biomass composition, genetics and biochemistry of important characters, germplasm resources, genetic improvement, breeding and cultivation of these crops are described. Future prospects are given.
