Cultivation of microalgae for biofuel production.

This chapter discusses the (i) potential of microalgae for biofuel production; (ii) microalgal nutrition; (ii) environmental factors affecting microalga growth (such as light, dissolved carbon dioxide and oxygen concentration, temperature and pH); (iii) microalgae cultivation systems (open pond, closed photobioreactors and hybrid systems); (iv) harvesting, cell disruption and drying; and (v) commercial production of microalgal biomass and biofuels. Microalgal biotechnology in areas such as strain selection and engineering for photobioreactor design and process optimization have established the potential of microalgae to convert solar to biomass energy as a sustainable and renewable replacement of fossil fuels. Nevertheless, the primary challenge remains the high energy intensity and low cost-effectiveness of the production processes.
