Biofuel crops: production, physiology and genetics.

Book cover for Biofuel crops: production, physiology and genetics.

Description

This book begins with a review of the history of biofuel. It contains chapters that are devoted to emerging technologies for biofuel production, cell wall structure and destructing approaches, cellulosic biofuel crops role in phytoremediation, and feedstock pretreatment methods. Detailed discussion on the physiological and genetic research challenges and opportunities for the improvement of biofue...

Chapter 4 (Page no: 54)

Physiology, biochemistry and genetics of microalgal growth and lipid production.

This chapter describes the different classification of lipids (fatty acids, triacylglycerols, glycerophospholipids, glycosylglycerols, sphingolipids, saccharolipids, sterols and prenol lipids) produced by microalgae, and highlights the biochemistry, physiology and genetics of microalgal lipid accumulation. The environmental factors inducing triacylglycerol accumulation are discussed, which include nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon starvation, salinity, temperature and light. Improved knowledge about microalgae biochemistry, physiology and genetics will enable us to turn microalgae into a reliable, economical and ecologically sustainable crop for biodiesel production.
