Chapter 9 (Page no: 102)

Irish cultural tourism - case study of policy development.

This chapter highlights how over 300 historic houses and gardens in Ireland provide the focus for a cultural tourism experience, emphasizing the scope for visitors to engage in creative forms of tourism within these locations. In marketing these cultural locations for tourism, it is argued that balance needs to be achieved between access and authenticity. The potential danger of maximizing the economic benefit from these sites may result in losing the cultural significance of the house and garden through over-commodification. With heritage becoming an important economic driver in Irish society, it is argued that a balance is needed between finding appropriate funding to keep these resources open as cultural attractions and preserving their cultural integrity. This necessitates a strategic approach to policy development for those organizations and agencies managing houses and gardens.
