Ecology and management of giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum).

Book cover for Ecology and management of giant hogweed (<i xmlns="">Heracleum mantegazzianum</i>).

This book is a compendium of the current knowledge on the invasive plant, giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) that spread from Caucasus across Europe, creating serious problems displacing and overtaking native plants. Topics covered include: taxonomy, genetics, reproductive ecology, and invasion dynamics at regional and local scales. Intended for students, researchers and practitioners in agr...

Chapter 9 (Page no: 144)

Impact of Heracleum mantegazzianum on invaded vegetation and human activities.

This chapter discusses which habitat patches are most likely to become invaded by giant hogweeds (Heracleum mantegazzianum), the impact of giant hogweeds on local plant communities, on regional flora, on riverbank erosion, on nature conservation, on human health (e.g. causing photodermatitis) and human activities, and their economic impact, based on field studies in 20 study areas (1-km2 landscape sections) in Germany.
