This chapter provides an introduction to Part I and focuses on the challenges and concerns of tourist destination governance. These include addressing the diversity of questions regarding issues such as regional and destination development, community involvement, responsiveness and future outcomes of governance in the context of tourism. Before choosing among the various approaches to destination governance, it is helpful to have an understanding of the underlying issues faced by communities, as well as what influences their directions and solutions. It has discussed the difficulties of governance at the regional government level. It also notes that local and regional jurisdictions in particular have traditionally found themselves confronted by difficult choices; on the one hand, the need to implement public goals and, on the other, to respond to the lure of the developer's dollar. The chapter also includes a summary of the four chapters in this part of the book which address issues of community involvement, responsiveness, leadership and future outcomes.
