What we do - provide information

Women farmers

Researchers, governments, extension workers and farmers all need up-to-date, relevant information in a format they find easy to use to do their jobs.

One of CABI’s key strengths is in managing and disseminating information. We use information and communication technologies to provide farmers, researchers and policy makers with the information they need to make informed decisions and to lift people out of poverty.

CABI’s bibliographic databases make the results of research available and searchable so that researchers can keep up to date with the latest thinking in the field, whilst our compendia provide in depth information about protecting crops, aquaculture and forestry. Extension workers, researchers and quarantine officers find them an invaluable tool.

Our programme of books focuses on topics like animal sciences, agricultural economics and rural studies, environmental sciences and plant sciences. They are well-respected and widely read by university students, researchers and academics. We also develop internet portals for funding organizations to disseminate information about their projects.

As part of our project work, we share our knowledge with farmers and extension workers so that they can work more effectively together. We also use technology like mobile phones  to reach people with information they need – whether it is market prices for their produce, pest warnings or the weather forecast. We run plant clinics at local markets, where farmers can come to have a pest or disease diagnosed and receive advice on appropriate ways of managing it. We also use video technology to demonstrate how to produce, select and store crops.
