Who we work with

Member countries

CABI is owned by the governments of 44 developed and developing member countries – which together account for around 75% of the world’s population. This unique, unbiased inter-governmental structure allows us to bring together the views and interests of donor and recipient countries in a way that other science-based development organizations cannot.

As a result, CABI gives its donor-country members a bridge to developing-world governments, providing them with unique insights into the needs of their priority countries. Our latest member country consultations, for example, saw governments in Asia, Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean make clear their need for CABI to help on biofuels and climate change, institutional capacity strengthening and knowledge management, and on tackling the phytosanitary issues that hamper farmers’ access to markets. Farmers

Supporting farmers is key to CABI's work and mission. Find out more about our work supporting farmers >>

Partners and researchers

We work in partnership with others to achieve our objectives. Building the capacity of our partners is an integral part of all our activities. Every CABI project is undertaken in partnership with other relevant local, national and regional partners to ensure that the solution to the issue we are looking at is robust, well communicated and sustainable. Our partners are listed on a project-by-project basis – you can find them through the interactive map.

Funding bodies

Even though we are a not-for-profit organization, we do not receive large core grants. In fact, only 3% of our revenue comes from core funding, while the rest is won through competitive bids or raised through CABI’s publishing activities. Because of this, CABI has to use the funds it receives extremely efficiently, and CABI has long proven itself to be a sustainable option for investors. This financial structure also pushes CABI to be demand-driven, focusing its activities on what partners in-country need and what they actually want us to achieve.

The funding we receive comes from a wide range of donors. When working with funding bodies we ensure that our project work is aimed at meeting their needs and objectives and delivers the required impact.

CABI Development Fund

In 1991, at the request of our member countries, we set up a partnership with donors and developing countries to deliver CABI’s expertise in information, science and communication to support sustainable agricultural development in line with the Millennium Development goals.

Donors make a financial contribution to the CABI Development Fund, and the pooled funds are used in line with their objectives and member country requests, to address global issues. The CABI Development Fund is supported by government donors who currently are: the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The funds are used for activities that: add value to existing national and regional initiatives, support critical research programmes for agricultural sustainability, improve access to information and scientific services for capacity building, facilitate the introduction of new technology, and provide a rapid response technical capability.
