This book comprises 7 chapters discussing phytobacteriology. Chapter 1 outlines the history and science of bacteriology Chapter 2 explains the characterization, identification and naming of bacteria. Chapter 3 explains how bacteria cause disease and how plants react to them. Chapter 4 discusses the epidemiology of bacterial diseases. The economic importance of bacterial diseases and the strategies for controlling these and reducing crop losses are discussed in chapters 5 and 6. Chapter 7 presents 50 examples of plant pathogenic bacteria and the corresponding plant diseases. The annexes include: lists of plant pathogenic bacteria and their hosts; list of phytoplasmas; diversity of Ralstonia solanacearum and schemes for detection of potato ring and brown rot; and EU schemes for detecting and identifying R. solanacearum on potato.
